BOLDMAN WINS AWARD
30th September 2008
Awards aren't everything. But they're always nice.
We at Boldman were delighted to win an award in the 'Technology, Innovation and Design category at the Bolton and Bury Business Awards 2008.
We chose three specific projects that were completed in 2008 and which closely matched the three headings: Technology, Innovation and Design...
TECHNOLOGY
First time in the world
As a prime supplier to BAE SYSTEMS we were tasked with designing and manufacturing a super large structure to cocoon a Nimrod Reconnaissance and Maritime Patrol Aircraft that was used to simulate lightning strikes as part of the aircraft’s final tests before going into full production.
Over 4.5 kilometres of aluminium profile was used in the construction and over 400 high voltage pulses of up to 55,000 amps were passed through the fuelling nozzle of the aircraft, to be returned through the structure.
This is probably the first and largest ever lightening strike test in the world that has been carried out on a full size fully fuelled aeroplane, giving manufacturers of both military and civil aircraft vital information on how aircraft perform and react when being hit by lightning. Such knowledge will result in safer aircraft being manufactured
INNOVATION
State of the art machines
In early 2000 the Nuclear Inspectorate (NII) set a target date of 2007 to the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) to prove that remote cutting of highly radioactive equipment was possible. This would remove the highly trained operators who normally do this cutting work by hand and are at risk whilst working in highly contaminated areas.
AWE asked Boldman in 2002 to design and manufacture a multi-axis diamond wire cutting machine to be used for remote size reduction of highly radioactive equipment prior to long-term storage. The Boldman diamond wire cutting machine went live in 2007 meeting the requirements of the inspectorate. So successful was this first the trial, AWE asked Boldman to design a second generation machine to meet more specific arduous tasks using state of the art technology.
This machine has now been accepted by AWE, reducing the risk of exposure-time- by removing the operator from the workspace, therefore providing a safer working environment for their staff
DESIGN
Largest LED screen installation in Europe
The seven giant LED screens installed at the new British Airways T5 terminal Heathrow, which was opened by the Queen on 14th March 2008. Involved Boldman designing, manufacturing and installing, the aluminium supporting structures 14 metres long by 4 metres high, back to 5 glass lined towers and then fitted 154 LED panels to each of the aluminium profile structures. Two of the screens on airside and five screens on passenger entrance side.
Working at height to the most stringent of Health and Safety regulations this was a 24/7 installation to meet the official opening date. Accuracy and alignment of the 154 screens was paramount to producing HD quality images demanded by Nokia, the end customer.
Content on the screens is provided by Nokia and provides a pleasing and welcoming environment throughout the T5 terminal.
